Here is one of my latest projects. A couple of weekends ago, I decided to try my hand at chickens.
The chickens were fun to cut even though the feathers were a little tricky.
For my final piece, I glued the two chickens down on the paper together. By cutting the birds separately, I could play around with positioning them just where I wanted them. This piece will be a part of the Art Squared auction in Spring City, Utah on the Saturday before Memorial Day.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-59870163096019730092013-12-11T10:26:00.000-07:002013-12-11T10:26:15.482-07:00This Year's Neule

It has been awhile since I have posted, but Christmas is just around the corner. That calls for taking a few minutes to cut a new neule design. This year it is an angel singing. It is a really nice to have a new addition hanging in my front room. I'm thinking that next year I will have to add a new string for neule hanging. It is getting a little crowded. I hope that your holidays are merry and bright this year!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-78103303760606769872013-07-23T07:20:00.002-06:002013-07-23T07:20:47.037-06:00Sunflowers

The sunflowers are starting to bloom along the roadside, and I was inspired to try my hand at some more papercuts. The top cut is 11 x 14, and all the black lines are cut paper. It got a little tricky to keep the lines straight as I tried to glue the colored pieces on underneath.

This sunflower was much easier to accomplish because it much smaller at 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. The paper lines were much more stable.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-63839435145909142852013-07-16T06:59:00.000-06:002013-07-16T06:59:54.750-06:00Hanging Out with Friends

Here is a papercut that I cut a little while ago based on an old photo. I wanted to try something a little bit different by leaving the black paper around the outside. I didn't think about the staples that I used to hold my pattern on top of the black paper, however, so I ended up with staple holes along the outside. Fortunately, those are easily covered up with a mat.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-35072530927730215462013-05-10T09:56:00.002-06:002013-05-10T09:57:13.568-06:00It is About Time for Another Papercut

It has been awhile since I have posted anything. I just can't believe how busy life has been lately. I finished this papercut this week for the Art Squared auction at Spring City, Utah over Memorial Day weekend. I had originally planned to place it over a watercolor wash, but I changed my mind when I was finished. I think it looks like a doily. The days are becoming colder, and it made me think of this fairy tale. This is the queen, Snow White's mother, sitting at her needle work on a cold winter's day. She pricked her finger and three drops of blood fell on the snow on the ebony window sill. For some reason, this made the queen think of her unborn child and come up with the name Snow White.
I hope that all your holidays are festive this year!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-79842797483508058842012-11-06T08:40:00.002-07:002012-11-06T08:40:49.719-07:00Finally Another Fairy Tale

It has been awhile since I have done a fairy tale cut. This is a scene from The Twelve Dancing Princesses. Here the soldier is given a magic cloak that will make him invisible in exchange for sharing his food with a fairy disguised as an old woman. With it the soldier will be able to follow the 12 princesses and discover why their dancing shoes are wore out every night. The lesson of this is that you should always share the last of your food with whatever senior citizen happens to cross your path. Good things will result.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-67538068363351878892012-08-27T08:06:00.001-06:002012-08-27T08:06:48.863-06:00Independence Hall

I sat down the other day and wanted another challenge. I have cut black outlines and added colored paper to the ATCs that I have made before, but I wondered how hard it would be to do the same thing in a larger format. This design is from a funny photo I took of my son trying to eat a massive hamburger earlier this year. The hardest part of the design was trying to work with the black outline. At the 8 x 10 size, it was hard to maintain the integrity of the shape while gluing it to the colored paper. I liked the result, but what I liked the best was the moans that I heard every time my son walked past the project. I was sure to hang the finished work up in a prominent spot in the house afterwards, at least for a few days. You have to get back at your teenagers some how.

Here is something that I should have added to my last post. Having cut the portraits of my nephew and his fiance, I just couldn't put my exacto knife down, so I made them a card to go with their gift. The card was 5 x 7 inches big, and on the front of it I did a layer cut of the Draper Utah Temple where they were married. The card took me as long to make as the original papercut. It was a fun challenge. I think I will have to try another one like it soon. Hmmm... I think I have a friend who is getting married in a couple of weeks.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-88718436050413733322012-05-30T12:35:00.002-06:002012-05-30T12:39:39.268-06:00A Wedding Present

Another wedding is coming soon. My oldest nephew is getting hitched in a couple of days. Since the last wedding present went over so well, I decided to do another cut for a wedding present. I just noticed that in both cuts the guy has his hand in his pocket. Why is that?Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-64485515413026395352012-05-08T09:32:00.000-06:002012-05-08T09:32:36.807-06:00The Young Artists

It has been awhile since I posted any papercuts. I have been going through a dry spell the last few months. Hopefully, things will improve soon. Lately, I have been watching a lecture series on the artists of the Italian Renaissance. That had some influence on this piece that I cut last week. It is 10 in. X 10 in., and will be part of an art auction held in Spring City, Utah over Memorial Day weekend. The two artists are based on a sketch that I did of two of my children last October.
Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-19892549742366963582012-01-28T18:04:00.005-07:002012-01-28T18:16:07.416-07:00Another BirdA couple of years ago I cut a picture of a robin in a tree. My husband really liked that piece, and he was sad when I sold it. He has wanted me to do another one since then. This week I finally got around to it. This time I made it a close up of the robin. The robin was cut separately and then glued onto the branch. I made the bird gray so that I could enter it into a black and white art show. I really had fun with the bird. When I get the cut back, I am going to see how it will look in a floating frame.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-69793340422809184372012-01-10T10:34:00.002-07:002012-01-10T10:37:34.041-07:00Happy CoupleMy youngest brother-in-law was married last Thursday. Again, I waited until the last minute to put these together and then did not feel inspired by just cutting out mailboxes. I took a little different twist. The first design is of a woman waiting for the mail to come. Is she waiting for a letter or the mailman? I used watercolor to add some color to this piece.

My second design is of a mailman.
This month's ATC trade was all about pets. This shouldn't have given as hard a time as it did, but I didn't think up an idea until the last minute. I decided to do unusual pets that belonged to U. S. presidents. The first pet was a squirrel named Pete that President Warren Harding claimed.
With the kids finally off to school, I hope to be able to do some more papercutting in the next few months. It was a good thing that I had these trades this summer or I might not have taken my knife out at all these past few months.

It continues to be hard to find time to think. This month's ATC theme was Route 66, but I wasn't feeling very inspired. I decided to go a different route, but still keep to an automobile theme. I find the stories of the first automobilists interesting, so I based this month's ATCs on some of the first people to cross the U. S. in automobiles. Thus "transcontinentalists". I am not even sure that is a word. My husband came up with the term.

The first is a picture of A. L. Westgard. He was a pathfinder for the AAA for more than 15 years. He crossed the continent many times searching for the best routes for cars to travel. He was called the "Daniel Boone of the Gasoline Age". Just before he died in 1920, Westgard published a book called "Tales of a Pathfinder" that details some of his adventures during his path finding. Maybe, it is because my kids are out of school. I did manage to squeeze in this cut last week. It has been awhile since I have tried anything this detailed. This is based on a photo I took of 2 of my kids looking at polliwogs in a puddle in Zion National Park last year. It was hard to glue down, and a few of the thinner lines broke, which was very frustrating.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10253196258499800767noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1799631087499867393.post-2064947403856707532011-06-01T12:06:00.002-06:002011-06-01T12:13:41.769-06:00Camping ATCsI am sorry that I haven't posted for a month.
